Shockwave Therapy for
Stubborn Chronic Pain.

Radial Pressure Wave Therapy (RPW) uses focused acoustic waves to stimulate healing in damaged tissue — breaking down scar tissue, reducing inflammation, and accelerating repair in conditions that haven't responded to other treatments.

How It Works

The Science Behind Shockwave Therapy

Radial Pressure Wave Therapy works by delivering focused acoustic pressure waves to the target tissue through a handheld applicator. These waves create a controlled micro-trauma that triggers the body's natural healing cascade — increasing blood flow, stimulating collagen production, and breaking down calcified deposits and scar tissue that are preventing normal healing.

1
Acoustic waves delivered to target tissue
A handheld applicator delivers precise radial pressure waves to the affected area. The waves penetrate deep into tissue without breaking the skin.
2
Controlled micro-trauma triggers healing
The waves create micro-trauma in the tissue — signaling the body to begin a fresh healing response in an area that may have become "stuck" in a chronic state.
3
Scar tissue and calcifications break down
The acoustic energy breaks down calcified deposits, scar tissue, and adhesions — common culprits in chronic plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and frozen shoulder.
4
Collagen production and blood flow increase
New collagen synthesis is stimulated and blood flow to the area improves — providing the raw materials needed for true tissue repair and lasting pain relief.
Why Try Shockwave?
When other treatments haven't workedShockwave is particularly effective for chronic conditions where rest, cortisone injections, and standard PT haven't produced lasting results.
Alternative to surgeryFor conditions like plantar fasciitis and calcific tendonitis, shockwave therapy can produce results comparable to surgery — without the risk or recovery time.
No drugs, no downtimeMost patients return to normal activities immediately. There are no medications involved and no post-procedure recovery period.
Addresses the root causeUnlike pain medication that masks symptoms, shockwave promotes actual tissue healing — addressing the structural cause of your pain.
Conditions Treated

What Shockwave Therapy Can Help With

Shockwave therapy is especially powerful for chronic musculoskeletal conditions — particularly those involving tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue that have failed to heal normally.

Plantar Fasciitis
One of the best-studied applications for shockwave therapy. Chronic heel pain from plantar fasciitis responds exceptionally well — often achieving lasting relief after 3–5 sessions when other treatments have failed.
Tendonitis & Tendinopathy
Achilles tendonitis, patellar tendonitis (jumper's knee), and rotator cuff tendinopathy. Shockwave breaks down calcifications and stimulates new healthy tendon tissue formation.
Calcific Shoulder Tendinitis
Calcium deposits in the rotator cuff tendons cause severe pain and restricted movement. Shockwave directly breaks down and disperses these calcifications non-surgically.
Tennis Elbow & Golfer's Elbow
Lateral and medial epicondylitis (tennis and golfer's elbow) respond well to shockwave therapy — treating the damaged tendon attachment at the elbow without surgery.
Hip Pain & Trochanteric Bursitis
Chronic hip pain from greater trochanteric bursitis and IT band syndrome — conditions notoriously difficult to treat with standard methods.
Chronic Muscle Pain & Trigger Points
Myofascial pain syndrome, trigger points, and chronic muscle tension that haven't responded to massage, stretching, or other soft tissue treatments.
Common Questions

Shockwave Therapy FAQ

Does shockwave therapy hurt?
Shockwave therapy can cause some mild discomfort during treatment — most patients describe it as a light tapping or pressure sensation. The treatment intensity is adjustable, and Dr. Addess works with each patient to find the right level. Any discomfort is typically brief and subsides immediately after the session. Most patients tolerate it very well.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients see significant improvement with 3 to 6 sessions, typically spaced one week apart. Chronic conditions or calcifications may require more sessions. Dr. Addess will give you a recommended course after evaluating your specific condition. Many patients notice meaningful improvement after just 2 to 3 sessions.
When will I start feeling better?
Some patients experience immediate pain relief after their first session. However, because shockwave works by triggering a healing response, the full benefits develop progressively over 4 to 12 weeks as the body completes the tissue repair process. Improvement typically continues even after the treatment course is finished.
I've already tried cortisone injections. Can shockwave still help?
Yes — and this is actually one of the most common situations where patients come to us. Cortisone injections can reduce pain temporarily but don't address the underlying structural damage. Shockwave therapy works differently — it promotes actual tissue repair rather than just masking inflammation. Many patients who have exhausted cortisone shots find lasting relief with shockwave.
Can shockwave be combined with other treatments?
Absolutely. Shockwave therapy works very well in combination with chiropractic care, physical therapy, and MLS Laser Therapy. In fact, for complex chronic conditions, a combined treatment approach typically produces the best results. Dr. Addess will design an integrated care plan that uses whatever combination of treatments is best suited to your specific needs.
